The "SteamHeat" photo was not digitally altered at all. The odd placement of the traffic pole, sidewalk, and brick wall are completely natural because the traffic pole had been knocked over in a storm. Besides having a dynamic composition there is also an interesting background story behind this photo. SteamHeat was the name of a strip club, which fought the local community in courts in order to continue having its nude dancers. Therefore, I felt the "one way" sign pointing to the gutter was incredibly fitting at that time.
